South African heavyweight producers, Gemini Major and Tweezy have started their own local beat battle and it is all going down tonight.
Who started the online beat battle contests?
The idea of assembling producers and pitting them against each other was born out of boredom, really. Swizz Beats and Timbaland, two iconic producers, tapped into a two-way Instagram Live feed to share some of the best work under their belts.
What started out as a friendly chat between two icons who share a great respect for each other, turned into a series of virtual face-offs to decide who runs the town with their catalogue.
Look out for T-Pain vs Lil Jon
The last beat battle saw Scott Storch go up against veteran southside DJ/Producer Mannie Fresh. It was a close call but Storch stole it with his endless catalogue of number one hits.
It is quite mindboggling that he beat Mannie without so much as a reach into the crates with Dr Dre collaborations.
Alas, that was fascinating to watch and next up on the virtual world stage is T-Pain, the proclaimed modern father of autotune, who is going up against the ad-lib king Lil Jon.
The beat battle goes live on Saturday 21:00 EST (that’s Sunday 03:00 for us in South Africa) on both of their respective Instagram pages.
