Team South Africa gears up for another day of competition at the 2024 Paris Olympics, with athletes scheduled to participate in athletics, canoeing, and sport climbing events.
Team SA at Paris Olympics: How are we doing so far?
On Monday, Prudence Sekgodiso finished eighth in the women’s 800m final with a time of 1:58.79.
The day centred around athletics at the Stade de France for Team SA. South Africa started the day with four medals: Tatjana Smith (gold and silver), the men’s sevens rugby team, and Alan Hatherly (bronze).
In the men’s 200m heats, Wayde van Niekerk finished third in his heat with a time of 20.42, securing a spot in the semi-finals.
Shaun Maswangani also qualified for the semi-finals by finishing third in his heat with a time of 20.20.
Benjamin Richardson pulled up with an upper right leg injury but managed to cross the finish line, leaving his participation in the repechage uncertain.
In the men’s discus qualification, Francois Prinsloo and Victor Hogan did not advance to the final.
Prinsloo’s best throw was 61.35m, placing him 13th in Group A, while Hogan’s best throw was 60.78m, placing him 13th in Group B.
Lythe Pillay and Zakithi Nene excelled in the men’s 400m repechage heats.
Pillay won his heat with a time of 45.40, and Nene secured victory in his heat with a time of 44.81, both advancing to the semi-finals.
In the women’s 400m heats, Miranda Coetzee finished fourth in her heat with a time of 51.58, just missing out on the semi-finals but qualifying for the repechage.
In sport climbing, Mel Janse van Rensburg scored 9.4 points in the men’s boulder and led the semi-final but did not advance.
Aniya Holder set a personal best of 9.12 seconds in the women’s speed qualification seeding heats but was beaten in the speed heats by Olympic champion Aleksandra Miroslaw.
Team South Africa schedule for Tuesday, 6 August 2024
Team SA athletes are set to compete in various events on Tuesday.
The action begins at 10:00 with Lauren Mukheibir in the women’s sport climbing semi-final.
Following that, Miranda Charlene Coetzee will compete in the women’s 400m repechage at 11.20.
In canoeing, Esti Olivier and Tiffany Amber Koch will race in the women’s K-2 500m Heat 2 at noon, while Hamish Lovemore and Andrew James Birkett will compete in the men’s K-2 500m Heat 4 at the same time.
The athletics events continue in the evening with Lythe Pillay and Zakithi Nene participating in the men’s 400m semi-final at 19.42.
The women’s 400m hurdles semi-final will feature Zenéy Geldenhuys and Rogail Joseph at 20.07.
