The 2022 Durban July returns for the first time since the start of the COVID-19 pandemic and at a time when face masks are a thing of the past.
2022 Durban July: Road closures you need to be aware of
Scores of celebrities, business magnates and the general public will descend on the Hollywoodbets Greyville Racecourse situated on Avondale Road in Durban, on Saturday, 2 July 2022.
At the Durban July media launch held on Tuesday, Thekwini Municipality mayor Mxolisi Kaunda revealed that while early projections suggested an attendances of at least 15 00, the overly booked accommodation spots in and around the city is an indication that more than 55 000 attendees can be expected at Africa’s premier horse-racing event.
“We are pleased to report that the organisers are putting the final touches to ensure that everything runs smoothly on the big day. The gallops have been held, thousands of punters and fashionistas from around the country and beyond are expected to descend to Durban’s doors. We are excited about the economic spin-off this event will bring to our city,” he said.
Per EastCoastRadio, eThekwini’s traffic management has begun preparations to control congestion in and around the Greyville racecourse on Saturday, 2 July 2022.
Here is a look at the road closures that are expected to be in place from Friday, 1 July 2022:
PLEASE NOTE: Information on road closures ahead of the 2022 Durban July will be updated as soon as we receive more details from KZN’s department of transport.
- Avondale Road is likely to be closed off to traffic between DLI Avenue and Sandile Thusi Road
- Haden Road, between Currie Road and Avondale Road is expected to be closed.
- Clarence Road, between Currie Road and Avondale Road is expected to be close.
- Traffic is likely to be diverted away from the DLI Avenue/Avondale Road intersection.
- Motorists not attending the event are advised to avoid :

- John Zikhali Road
- Edith Benson Crescent
- Problem Mkhize Road
