The operation was conducted by a multi-disciplinary team comprising the Tactical Management Operational Section (TOMS) of the Hawks, the SAPS Special Task Force (STF), and Falcon Risk Security.
According to authorities, intelligence suggested the suspects were planning an ATM bombing in the Witbank area.
The team identified a suspected safe house in Schoongezicht, Emalahleni, where the group was reported to be gathering.
Law enforcement officers stationed themselves strategically to monitor a white Toyota Hilux, which had been flagged in the intelligence report.
The vehicle was spotted leaving the area, and when police attempted to stop it, the suspects opened fire, resulting in a shootout.
During the operation, five suspects were fatally wounded, and one was injured and taken into custody.
Law enforcement recovered several weapons, including an R5 rifle, a hunting rifle with a scope, and three 9mm pistols.
Explosives were also found at the scene.
