Brave onlookers who caught the Westonaria cash-in-transit on camera captured the moment armed robbers detonated an explosive that ripped the money truck to shreds.
Westonaria cash-in-transit heist: What’s the latest?
From what we understand, the incident took place in broad daylight in Bainskloof, Westonaria, on Wednesday.
Details around the incident are still murky but it’s believed an unidentified vehicle rammed into the money truck, forcing it to a halt. Gunfire was exchanged and according to Netcare911 spokesperson Shawn Herbst, two security guard sustained minor-to-moderate injuries.
In the video clip, which you can watch below, a man, believed to be the suspect, can be seen placing the explosive device on the rear side of the cash van and moving away.
After a brief pause with the entire neighbourhood completely gob-smacked by the events that unfolded before their eyes, a loud and thunderous explosion tears the money truck’s canopy to shreds, making way for the armed robbers to get to the bags of cash.
An undisclosed amount of money was removed from the truck and the suspects, it’s believed, are still at large.

Similar scenes were witnessed in Goodwood, along the N7/N1 turn-off earlier this week. Two vehicles were involved in a brazen daylight cash-in-transit heist but the quick response of SAPS’ national intervention unit foiled the robbers’ plans.
While a number of suspects managed to peel away with bags of money, four of their co-conspirators were nabbed and currently, Cape Town law enforcement officials are hot on the heels of the escapees.
“A 9mm pistol with ammunition was recovered at the scene. A total of four suspects, aged between 21 and 42 years old were arrested and will appear before the Goodwood Magistrate’s Court soon on charges of cash-in-transit heist, attempted murder, illegal possession of [a] firearm and ammunition, as well as possession of an explosive device,” Lieutenant Colonel Robert Netshiunda told Swisher Post.
