Randburg authorities have turned to the public for assistance in identifying a male suspect who was caught on CCTV disarming a vehicle’s security alarm with a jammer device and making off with a bag.
Watch: Notorious Randburg car jammer caught on CCTV
Security cameras lodged over a crowded public parking lot captured crucial identifiers of the suspect who brazenly broke into a vehicle in broad daylight.
These images, taken from the footage that’s since gone viral on social media, provide a clear description of the man Randburg police are searching for.
In the footage, taken on Friday, 29 November 2024, at approximately 16:30, the suspect is seen casually standing outside a parked SUV occupied by who we can now identify as his accomplices.
The well-groomed man, dressed in all black, is unassuming as he pretends to look for car keys.
Passers-by, completely unaware of the situation unfolding before them, walked by as the suspect displayed a chilling calm while using a car jamming device to disarm the target vehicle’s security alarm.
A car jamming device is a tool used to block the wireless signal between a car’s remote key fob and the vehicle’s locking system. These devices exploit vulnerabilities in remote locking systems by emitting a stronger frequency on the same bandwidth as the key fob. This interference prevents the car from locking, leaving it accessible to criminals.
The device is often small and portable, resembling a walkie-talkie or similar gadget. It works by jamming the radio signal from the remote key when a driver presses the lock button. While the driver may assume their vehicle is secure, the jamming ensures the signal never reaches the car, leaving doors unlocked and allowing unauthorised access.
After idling for several minutes, the suspect swoops in for the target vehicle, not to steal it, but to remove a bag left in the backseat.
With a chilling level of precision, the suspect was in and out in minutes.
While his execution was admittedly clinical, he was not thorough enough to mask his identity.
It’s believed the suspect is still at large and likely operates in and around the Randburg region.
