Menlyn Mall cautiously reopened its doors on Monday after the dramatic events that unfolded a day earlier, where armed gunmen pulled off a brazen jewellery store heist.
Watch: Menlyn Mall robbers bypass security spikes
Details around the incident are still murky. However, social media erupted when video footage surfaced, showing how a number of unidentified males believed to be suspects in a jewellery store robbery managed to bypass security spikes at one of the mall’s boom gate entrances.
The spikes, it’s believe, were activated as a means to puncture the tyres of the suspects’ getaway vehicles, a white Volkswagen and an ocean blue BMW.
But, what the mall’s security team did not count on, was the preparedness of the robbers who simply placed wheel ramps over the spikes and easily rode past the boom gate.

What we know about the jewellery heist
A day has passed since the incident and Menlyn police have yet to confirm the arrests of the jewellery robbers.
From what we understand, an undisclosed amount of precious items was removed from the store and a security officer was shot. It’s believed the victim was rushed to a nearby hospital where he’s been receiving treatment.
As far as efforts to track down the suspects, police have yet to issue a statement with updates on the search. CCTV footage from the mall captured registration plates of the getaway vehicles but at this time, it’s unknown if this lead has yielded anything positive.
The Menlyn jewellery heist took place two weeks after a store in Centurion Mall was taken down in a similar fashion. However, at this time, the two incidents have not been linked by authorities.
This is a developing story.
