Grassy Park mob caught on camera robbing local store
The robbers, caught on security cameras, made off with cash, cigarettes, and card machines.
The incident occurred at around 18:20 on Klip Road in Lotus River.
The robbery began when two men, later identified as lookouts, entered the store. They engaged the store clerk in conversation, with one man eventually covering his face upon noticing the security camera.
After a brief chat, the men appeared to signal to their accomplices outside the store.
Moments later, a mob of men, some armed with knives, stormed the store.
One of the robbers leapt over the counter to grab the cashier’s till, while others looted cigarettes and other goods.
The entire ordeal lasted only a few minutes, with the men fleeing the scene shortly after.
No one was physically harmed during the robbery.
It is not clear how much cash was in the till at the time of the robbery.
Generally, a small convenience store may hold around ZAR 3,800 (approximately $200) in a till, depending on the day’s transactions.
The suspects also stole several card machines, which were later confirmed by police as unusable due to deallocation.
The Grassy Park police have confirmed the arrest of two suspects, aged 24 and 50, in connection with the robbery.
They are expected to appear in the Wynberg Magistrates’ Court after formal charges are laid.
Police have stated that additional arrests may follow as the investigation continues.
Cape Town police spokesperson Sergeant Wesley Twigg stated:
“We are investigating the circumstances surrounding the robbery and will pursue all leads to apprehend the remaining suspects.”
