A cash-in-transit heist attempted by brazen armed robbers in New Germany, KwaZulu-Natal (KZN), was caught on camera.
Security guard dies in fiery encounter with CIT robbers
The fiery encounter between three heavily armed gunmen and G4S officials resulted in the death of one security guard, police confirmed in a statement to News24.
Scenes of pandemonium broke out near a business district on Qashana Khuzwayo Road, when a series of gunshots rang off outside a bank, on Monday.
According to police spokesperson Lieutenant-Colonel Robert Netshiunda, two security guards “were walking towards the ATM when they were accosted by a group of suspects who were carrying high-calibre firearms.”
“It is also reported that a shootout ensued between the suspects and the guards. One guard was fatally wounded whilst the other was airlifted to hospital with gunshot wounds,” he revealed.
The robbers hastily peeled away from the scene without the money they were after. Moreover, Netshiunda added, a team of patrol officers who, at the time, had not been alerted of the shooting, were targeted by the suspects at the corner of Shepstone and Otto Volek.
“The suspects reportedly opened fire at the two police officers, but the officers tactically took cover and survived the shooting unscathed,” Netshiunda noted.
Watch: New Germany cash-in-transit filmed by eyewitnesses
New Germany police are in search of a white Chevrolet bake with the registration plates NPS 72845, as well as a white Toyota Avanza. These vehicles, it’s believed, were directly involved in the deadly cash-in-transit heist attempt.
Eyewitnesses who were situated across the road from the shooting caught this footage of the moment the first round of gunshots rang off.
