Vosloorus rocked by SAPS double murder
The tragedy unfolded around 07:00 when two officers from the Vosloorus SAPS arrived at a colleague’s home on Mvemve Street, Mailula Park.
According to reports, the officers were there to pick up their fellow officer when they encountered a robbery in progress at a neighbouring house.
The suspects, believing the police had arrived to stop their crime, immediately opened fire on the officers.
Both officers were struck by the gunfire.
Despite efforts to save them, they succumbed to their injuries on the scene, marking a devastating loss for the Vosloorus SAPS and the community they served.
The incident comes just days after Police Minister Senzo Mchunu highlighted the dangers faced by South African police officers, revealing that 39 officers had been killed in the line of duty between April 2023 and March 2024.
Minister Mchunu, speaking at a commemoration ceremony on Sunday, emphasised the sacrifices made by those in uniform:
“Each name inscribed on our memorial stands as a testament to the ultimate sacrifice made by those who wore the uniform with pride and integrity.”
The police have yet to release an official statement regarding the incident, and details about the suspects involved in the robbery are still emerging.
