Two bankers arrested in connection with Ivory Park Mall heist
According to a statement from the Gauteng Hawks, the two bank employees, both aged 36, allegedly conspired with two male accomplices, aged 26 and 33, to orchestrate the robbery, which occurred on Wednesday, 27 November 2024.
Preliminary investigations suggest that the employees provided inside assistance, enabling the theft of more than R3 million.
Following the robbery, a joint task force was established to track the suspects.
The team comprised Gauteng police detectives, the Hawks, crime intelligence members, Gauteng Highway Patrol, and bank investigators.
Within 48 hours, investigators gathered critical information about the suspects and the getaway vehicles.
The first suspect was arrested on Friday, 29 November, in Rosslyn, Tshwane. Shortly afterwards, the team tracked down the alleged kingpin in Ga-Rankuwa.
He was found with stolen bank envelopes containing clients’ bank cards and a hijacked VW Golf.
On Saturday, 30 November, one of the bank employees was arrested at her workplace, while the second was apprehended later that day in Midrand.
The four suspects face charges including business robbery, possession of hijacked vehicles, and possession of stolen property.
Police have indicated that efforts to locate additional suspects are ongoing.
