A regular day browsing the aisles in search of discounts and sweet deals turned to horror for shoppers in Soweto this past weekend.
Security cameras inside the Shoprite outlet captured the spine-chilling moments that preceded the fatal shooting of an unidentified male victim.
In the footage, three suspects could be seen forcing one of the cashiers to empty her till into a yellow sack.
Completely desensitised to the nightmare unravelling before her eyes, a female shopper stood stoic, displaying a chilling calm as she watched the men pillaging the till.
Things quickly escalated when the male victim, walking into frame to assist a man subdued by one of the suspects, confronted the robbers with an air of confidence.
The man, seemingly familiar with the robbers, tried to distract the armed men with conversation, before, out of the blue, he swung at one of them, striking him in the face, albeit, not hard enough to disarm him.
Things quickly went awry when the male victim, in his valiant attempt to make a run for it after failing to prevent the robbery, could not gather enough pace and agility to dodge the rain of gunfire.
Emergency medics declared the man dead at the scene.
