Motherwell cash-in-transit robbery suspects set to make first court appearance
On Monday, 9 December 2024, a G4S armoured vehicle travelling from a Sasol garage to Kwazakhele was ambushed on the M17 near Motherwell.
The suspects, reportedly travelling in two white bakkies, opened fire, forcing the vehicle to a standstill.
According to Eastern Cape Hawks spokesperson Warrant Officer Ndiphiwe Mhlakuvana, explosives were allegedly used to access the cash, and an undisclosed amount of money was stolen.
Three security guards sustained bullet wounds during the attack.
Emergency services attended to the injured guards, and they were transported to a hospital for treatment.
A coordinated response by multiple law enforcement units resulted in the arrest of six suspects within minutes of the robbery.
Provincial Head Major General Mboiki Obed Ngwenya praised the collaborative effort that involved various specialised units, including the Hawks’ Serious Organised Crime Investigation team and other regional law enforcement agencies.
During the operation, a dramatic confrontation occurred as suspects reportedly opened fire on responding officers. A vehicle chase ensued, with the suspects abandoning a bakkie and hijacking an Audi A1.
The suspects then fled on foot before being apprehended.
The operation led to the recovery of five rifles, two pistols, and several original G4S money bags containing cash, gloves, and balaclavas.
Among the six suspects arrested, four sustained injuries during the shootout.
Further intelligence led officers to the second bakkie involved in the robbery, which was found abandoned in Soweto Township, Gqeberha.
It’s believed several more suspects involved in the robbery are still at large and investigations are ongoing.
