A man known online as Sibusiso Lawrence has gone viral after video footage of him explaining why he allegedly killed his ex-girlfriend surfaced on social media.
UPDATE: KZN police confirmed that Sibusiso Lawrence was never arrested. He was found hanging from a tree near the crime scene this morning.
What Sibusiso Lawrence did to his ex-girlfriend
The Scottburgh native took to Facebook on Tuesday evening, at approximately 18:00, to post a series of photos and a video, showing what would be the last moments of a woman seen seated behind him.
In the video, chillingly filmed moments before the murder, Lawrence appears normal as he records himself listening to music with a child, presumably his daughter.
He gestures for the little girl to dance to the Gqom music blasting out of his car speakers, and she obliges, albeit hesitant. The woman in the backseat, seemingly at ease, mutters something to Lawrence and suddenly his demeanour changes.
He does not acknowledge her and, instead, stares blankly at the camera before he turns his attention back to his daughter, asking her to dance for his audience.
In hindsight, one could easily assume the little girl’s facial expressions and body language exuded the tensions that gripped the atmosphere inside that car.
While it’s unclear when that video was taken, we can, without an official statement from KZN police, reasonably assume that it was filmed shortly before the murder.
Lawrence, in the video taken in the car, wore the same t-shirt he appeared in moments later when he confessed to killing his ex-girlfriend.
In the confession posted on his Facebook Story, the Scottburgh native detailed the motive behind his heinous actions.
According to Lawrence, killing his ex-girlfriend, whose identity has yet to be unveiled, was the only resort after she had expressed her decision to end the relationship.
Lawrence, his face covered in scratch marks, signs that the woman fought for her life, explained that he was left with no choice after his ex chose to leave him right before she was due a windfall from the Road Accident Fund (RAF), a claim that has yet to be verified.
He lamented about raising a child that was not his biologically and losing money trying to satisfy her with gifts and financial support.
In his perspective, killing his ex in cold blood and posting her lifeless body was the only acceptable conclusion to their romance.
When this article was published, KZN police had yet to respond to our request for comment. While reports online suggest Lawrence has been arrested, a formal notice from authorities has yet to surface.
Chillingly, Lawrence gutted his girlfriend to death a week after South Africa and the rest of the world observed 16 Days of Activism against Gender-based Violence, a campaign that, in 2024, sought to emphasise “the root causes of GBVF, promoting positive masculinity, promoting gender equity, and creating economic opportunities for women and children.”
Moreover, the whereabouts of the child seen in the video taken before the murder are unknown at this stage.
This is a developing story.
