The Senzo Meyiwa murder trial is set to resume today at the High Court in Pretoria, with a special sitting scheduled to address a key development in the case.
Accused Number One, Muzikawukhulelwa Sibiya, will appoint new legal representation following the untimely death of his attorney, advocate Thulani Mngomezulu, last month.
What to expect in court today
Judge Ratha Mokgoatlheng will oversee proceedings, which will focus on resolving Sibiya’s legal representation. Advocate Mngomezulu passed away on 10 December 2024, before he could cross-examine lead investigator Brigadier Bongani Gininda, whose testimony is pivotal to the prosecution’s case.
To expedite the process, Legal Aid South Africa has recommended that Sibiya be represented by one of the attorneys already involved in the trial.
Advocate Charles Mnisi, representing Accused Number Three, suggested this move could save valuable time and avoid delays caused by a new attorney needing to familiarise themselves with the case.
However, the identity of Sibiya’s new counsel remains unknown and is expected to be finalized today.
Trial developments so far
The trial has captured national attention, delving into the events of 26 October 2014, when soccer star Senzo Meyiwa was fatally shot at the Vosloorus home of his girlfriend, musician Kelly Khumalo.
Initially reported as a botched robbery, the case has taken numerous twists, with conflicting testimonies and allegations of a cover-up.
Sibiya and four other suspects—Bongani Ntanzi, Mthokoziseni Maphisa, Mthobisi Mncube, and Fisokuhle Ntuli—are charged with Meyiwa’s murder. All five have pleaded not guilty.
Lead investigator Brigadier Gininda has previously testified that:
- The confessions of two accused contained false information.
- The accused implicated Kelly Khumalo as orchestrating a “hit” on Meyiwa.
These revelations have fueled speculation and controversy, leaving the public and Meyiwa’s family demanding justice.
