Ravensmead High pupil killed on his way to school
What started out as a regular school morning in Elsies River, where pupils anticipated a slow-paced day of revision learning following the conclusion of fourth-term exams quickly escalated into utter chaos when gunshots rang off near Ravensmead High School.
According to Western Cape Education Department spokesperson Bronagh Hammond, the target of the shooting was a 14-year-old boy whose identity remains unknown at this stage of reporting.
Hammond added that the attack was so wild and unhinged that the shooters’ poor aim struck two other victims aged 15 and 17.
As chaos broke out at the crime scene, pandemonium set off a kilometre away, where pupils from St Andrews Technical High sounded the alarm after the gunmen ran into the school after shooting a 55-year-old man.
“This caused panic amongst the learners. Some fled the school grounds. The schools in the area immediately went into lockdown mode in terms of safety procedures, however, some parents are collecting their children from the schools,” Hammond shared.
Cape Town police, in a statement released shortly after this article was first published, confirmed that a case of murder and attempted murder is being led by anti-gang unit detectives.
“The area has been bolstered with additional deployments in an effort to stabilise the precinct. The motive for the shooting forms part of ongoing investigations. Part of the investigations undertaken is to determine if the two incidents are related,” spokesperson Brigadier Novela Potelwa confirmed.
The city has been gripped with escalating gang violence ahead of what could be a bloody festive season.
This past weekend, a reformed Americans gangster, Solin Roman, who shot to fame earlier this year after appearing on a viral Wide Awake Podcast episode, was targeted in an attempted hit in Manenberg.
Roman is recovering in hospital and the suspects behind the attack are still at large.
Around the same time in Elsiesrivier, authorities were called to the gory scene of a mass shooting that was caught on camera.
A suspect was captured by surveillance cameras shooting indiscriminately at a group of six men, possibly linked to a rival gang.
The fiery encounter ended with two men critically injured. The person responsible for the attack is still at large, it’s believed.
