The incident, which also resulted in the death of his bodyguard, occurred at the Zackarria Park Community Centre during a back-to-school event, a week ago.
Police have now identified two men as persons of interest, a development that has restored life to the double murder investigation.
“Police want to question these two men following the murder of Rand Water executive Teboho Joala,” police confirmed.
Who killed Joala? – Here’s what we know so far
The case has captured widespread attention due to Joala’s significant contributions to Johannesburg’s water supply sector.
At his funeral this past weekend, Water and Sanitation Minister Senzo Mchunu called for the police to prioritise the case.
The murder, brazenly executed in front of numerous primary school children at a Rand Water donation event, has heightened speculation about the motive behind such a targeted act of violence.
Family members have suggested that Joala might have been a marked man, and before he died, made mention of receiving threats to his life that he previously ignored.
The family has since appointed a private investigator to work in tandem with authorities to fast-track the murder probe.
As details continue to emerge, the focus remains on identifying the two persons of interest believed to have knowledge that could help investigators solve Joala’s murder.
