An off-duty law enforcement officer was attacked outside his home in Gugulethu on Saturday night in what appeared to be an attempted hijacking.

The incident occurred around 19:00, according to city officials.
The officer’s wife reported that multiple rounds were fired during the attack, two of which struck the 40-year-old officer.
He was quickly transported to a nearby hospital where he is currently in stable condition.
Mayoral Committee Member for Safety and Security JP Smith condemned the attack and urged the public to come forward with any information.
“This callous attack cannot be condoned. It comes just a week after our annual Remembrance Service, and almost a year to the day that we lost another Law Enforcement officer. The City will support the South African Police Service in their investigation to ensure that those responsible are brought to book,” Smith stated.

Weekend sweep yields key arrests for Cape Town law enforcement
Over the weekend, the City of Cape Town’s law enforcement agencies conducted an extensive crackdown operation, resulting in the arrest of 230 suspects and the issuance of 55,600 fines.
Among these, Metro Police officers arrested 42 individuals and issued 2,167 traffic and by-law fines.
Notable successes from Sunday, 4 August 2024, included K9 units Kink and Kelev discovering a 9mm pistol and various drugs hidden in a toolbox during a search of a Bellville South property.
Additionally, officers arrested a 54-year-old suspect in Wynberg believed to have been selling drugs from his car, where quantities of mandrax, tik, and heroin were found.
Law Enforcement officers made 161 arrests and issued 3,982 fines during the operations.
The Traffic Service issued 49,451 fines, impounded 185 public transport vehicles, and executed 1,581 warrants of arrest.
Arrests included 19 individuals for driving under the influence of alcohol, seven for reckless and negligent driving, and one for an outstanding warrant.
