Libyan nationals arrested for operating military base in White River
In a significant security breach, the South African Police Service (SAPS) in Mpumalanga, in collaboration with the Provincial Joint Structure (ProvJoints) and the Department of Home Affairs, apprehended 95 Libyan nationals suspected of operating an illegal military training base in White River.
Acting on intelligence information received two days prior, Major General Zeph Mkhwanazi, Acting Provincial Commissioner of the SAPS in Mpumalanga, convened the ProvJoints to address the threat.
A coordinated joint operation was conducted on Friday, 26 July 2024, leading to the discovery of the base and the subsequent arrests.
Initially designated as a training site, the location had been converted into a covert military training facility.
Major General Mkhwanazi stated:
“We take any threat to the security and stability of our province and country very seriously. This operation demonstrates our commitment to acting swiftly and decisively against any activities that could undermine our national interests and ensure the safety of our citizens because that is our primary mandate.”
The 95 individuals, all Libyan nationals, are currently being questioned by authorities.
The gravity of this illegal operation cannot be overstated, as it poses significant risks to national security and stability.
The suspects face charges related to operating an unlicensed military training facility and potential violations of immigration laws.
If found guilty, they could face severe penalties, including deportation and lengthy prison sentences.
The investigation remains ongoing, and further details will be provided as they become available.
