Mpumalanga police make crucial breakthrough in horror assassination
Mpumalanga police have made significant progress in the investigation of the brutal assassination of a businessman on Wednesday evening.
The incident occurred near Chrissiesmeer while the 63-year-old businessman was travelling with two other occupants to Eswatini.
According to the police statement, the businessman was shot inside his vehicle, while the other two passengers escaped without injuries.
Promptly alerted to the situation, the Ermelo K9 Unit and Chrissiesmeer Detectives responded swiftly, launching an intensive investigation.
During their patrol, officers noticed a grey Audi A5 SUV driving at high speed without registration plates.
The officers engaged in a brief chase and successfully cornered the vehicle, apprehending two male suspects aged 29 and 41.
Upon searching the SUV, police recovered a firearm and ammunition believed to have been used in the assassination.
The weapon will undergo ballistic testing to determine if it was involved in any other criminal activities.
Acting Provincial Commissioner of the SAPS in Mpumalanga Major General Zeph Mkhwanazi commended the officers for their swift and decisive action.
“This incident highlights the commitment and readiness of our police officers to respond to criminal activities, even while off duty. We will not tolerate lawlessness and we will always ensure that those responsible for heinous activities are brought to justice,” he stated.
The suspects are now facing multiple charges, including murder and possession of an unlicensed firearm with ammunition.
They are expected to appear at the Ermelo Magistrate’s Court on Friday, 2 August 2024.
