KwaZulu-Natal (KZN) police neutralised what is believed to be one of Durban’s most-wanted cash-in-transit (CIT) syndicates, in a dramatic shootout, on Tuesday morning.
Durban cash-in-transit suspects killed in police shootout
According to reports, members of the Directorate for Priority Crime Investigation (DPCI) provincial tracking team, alongside the anti-gang unit, PMB K9, and Magma Security and Investigations, engaged in a shootout with suspected CIT criminals in the Phoenix area.
The operation took a deadly turn as the law enforcement team allegedly came under heavy fire from the suspects.
As a result, at least two individuals suspected of involvement in CIT heists were fatally shot.
Following the confrontation, rifles, ammunition, and a significant amount of money were recovered from the scene by the authorities.
Although initial reports indicate that some suspects sustained injuries during the exchange, there are ongoing efforts to locate any individuals who may have managed to evade capture.
While police are yet to officially confirm the identities of the deceased suspects, sources close to the situation have indicated that they were allegedly linked to a recent CIT heist in the Durban central business district (CBD).
This particular heist tragically resulted in the loss of a security guard’s life at the intersection of Bertha Mkhize and Joe Slovo Street.
As the operation continues and further details emerge, authorities are expected to provide updates on the incident.
