A 21-year-old suspect has been arrested in connection with the controversial Edumarks.co.za website, which illegally accessed and leaked the 2024 matric results ahead of their official release.
Edumarks mastermind arrested: Here’s everything we know
The arrest comes after an intense investigation led by the Hawks, following reports of the data breach earlier this month.
The Edumarks platform, now defunct, was found to have unlawfully accessed sensitive student information and offered early access to matric results for a fee.
The site’s operation caused widespread concern among students, parents, and educational authorities, prompting immediate action from law enforcement.
The suspect, whose identity is withheld, was apprehended in a late-night raid at his residence in Gauteng. Authorities allege that he masterminded the breach by exploiting vulnerabilities in the Department of Basic Education’s database.
According to reports, the individual allegedly used advanced technical skills to infiltrate the system and obtain the results of the 2024 matric class.
Hawks spokesperson Colonel Katlego Mogale confirmed the arrest, stating:
“This arrest marks a significant step in combating cybercrimes targeting government databases. We are working closely with cybersecurity experts to trace the full extent of the breach and ensure those responsible are held accountable.”
Investigators believe the suspect acted alone but are not ruling out the possibility of accomplices.
Digital evidence, including devices suspected to contain hacking tools and transaction records, was seized during the raid and is currently being examined.
How Edumarks operated
Edumarks.co.za marketed itself as a solution for anxious matriculants wanting to access their results early.
It charged a one-time fee of R99.90 for its service, claiming accuracy rates from previous years.
The site’s claim that it accessed results from official channels raised immediate red flags, prompting the Department of Basic Education to issue a statement condemning the platform.
The breach has not only impacted the students but also raised questions about the security of the Department of Basic Education’s systems.
The department is reportedly collaborating with law enforcement to strengthen its cybersecurity measures.
The arrested individual faces charges under the Cybercrimes Act, which could result in significant penalties, including imprisonment, if found guilty.
The investigation continues as authorities work to identify any additional breaches and prevent further unauthorized access to sensitive educational data.
