Luigi Mangione, 26, was formally charged on Monday with second-degree murder, three counts of firearm-related offences, and forgery in connection with the fatal shooting of UnitedHealthcare CEO Brian Thompson last Wednesday in Midtown Manhattan.
Luigi Mangione manifesto revealed: Here’s what it says
Authorities apprehended Mangione earlier in the day at a McDonald’s in Altoona, Pennsylvania, following a tip-off.
Mangione was arrested after Altoona police identified him using surveillance images released by the New York Police Department (NYPD).
Officers discovered a gun and silencer, reportedly created with a 3D printer, in Mangione’s backpack.
They also found a handwritten manifesto outlining grievances against the healthcare industry, specifically targeting UnitedHealthcare.
The manifesto, spanning 262 words, criticises healthcare companies for prioritising profits over care.
“These parasites had it coming,” one excerpt reads.
Mangione expressed regret for the trauma caused but stated the action was “necessary.”
The document mentions UnitedHealthcare’s market growth and juxtaposes it against declining American life expectancy, concluding:
“The American public has allowed [this] to happen.”
Mangione, a Maryland native and Gilman School valedictorian, moved to Honolulu in 2022, where he lived in a co-living space.
Friends described him as an accomplished engineer battling severe chronic back pain, which required surgery in 2023.
A former roommate, RJ Martin, recalled how Mangione’s condition impacted his quality of life, saying:
“He knew dating and physical intimacy weren’t possible with his back condition.”
The Mangione family, including his cousin, Maryland state delegate Nino Mangione, issued a statement expressing shock and devastation over the arrest, offering prayers to all affected parties.
Mangione remains in custody in Pennsylvania, awaiting transfer to New York for prosecution.
Authorities are investigating the weapon’s origins and any potential connections between Mangione and UnitedHealthcare.
