A security guard from Limpopo has been arrested and charged with the murder of his girlfriend, Fezile Nqumalo, after his three-year-old son, whom he had allegedly tried to kill, survived the ordeal and led police to his mother’s body.
Limpopo man identified as mom killer, thanks to this brave toddler
As reported by News24, Limpopo police had been investigating the murder of Nqumalo, whose body was found in a bushy area in Mamphahlane, a village situated in the Greater Sekhukhune District Municipality, on Saturday, 26 March 2022.
In a statement, police spokesperson Brigadier Motlafela Mojapelo confirmed community members found Nqumalo’s body after her three-year-old son, who was bleeding profusely from stab wounds, alerted neighbours.
Further investigations into Nqumalo’s death led investigators to eMalahleni, in KwaZulu-Natal (KZN), where she was from. Her family, it was found, had reported her missing days before her hacked body was discovered.
“Preliminary investigations indicated that the suspect stabbed both the woman and her son. The three-year-old victim apparently regained consciousness and was able to raise the alarm,” the police revealed.
Thanks to the toddler’s bravery, Limpopo police were able to determine that his father may have been responsible for his mother’s murder.
Last week, a manhunt for Nqumalo’s boyfriend ended when he was arrested and charged with murder and attempted murder. The motive behind the violent killing is still unknown at this stage.
The 29-year-old suspect, a security guard by profession, is expected to appear in the Mecklenburg Magistrate’s Court on Monday.
“This arrest will bring a certain level of solace to the affected family. Even though it will not bring back their loved one… it will send a clear message to other perpetrators of these horrendous crimes that the police will be relentless in pursuit of justice,” Limpopo top-cop ommissioner Lieutenant-General Thembi Hadebe said in reaction.
