A 26-year-old male suspect has been charged with the negligent murder of a seven-month-old baby from Giyani, Limpopo.
Limpopo man charged with killing infant
The incident stems from a quarrel between two neighbours that ended in the untimely death of a newborn.
According to Limpopo police spokesperson Colonel Moatshe Ngoepe, the suspect got into it with his neighbours on Monday, 2 November 2020.
The matter is still under investigation but it’s believed the heated argument was about the neighbour’s children.
Ngoepe noted in a statement that the confrontation boiled over when the male suspect, allegedly blinded by rage, hauled out a pick handle from his residence and “went back to his neighbour to continue with the fight.”
“That is when the suspect used the pick handle to assault the mother of the victim,” Col. Ngoepe wrote.
When is his first court appearance?
At the time of the attack, police believe the victim had the seven-month-old baby in her grasp. Consequently, the infant suffered blunt force injuries and was rushed to a number of hospitals before she succumbed to her wounds at Letaba.
What was previously filed as a case docket of assault with intent to cause grievous bodily harm was quickly upgraded to murder.
Limpopo police arrested the 26-year-old on Wednesday 4 November 2020. He is expected to make his first appearance at the Giyani Magistrate’s Court, on Thursday.
