The arrests were part of a targeted operation carried out by a coalition of police units, responding to the brutal murders of three men in what police suspect to be an act of vigilante justice.
The bodies were discovered early Monday morning near a dam in Wallacedene, and preliminary evidence suggested the victims had been severely beaten in a manner consistent with extrajudicial punishment.
Cape Town SAPS spokesperson Colonel Andre Traut issued a stern statement on Wednesday, condemning the apparent vigilantism and affirming law enforcement’s commitment to addressing such actions.
“Vigilantism is condemned in the strongest possible terms,” stated Traut.
“Those who are under the impression that they can take the law into their own hands and get away with it should reconsider. This is what seven suspects, aged between 24 and 49, realised when they were arrested during a tracing operation.”
The arrests followed an intense overnight operation involving detectives from the Provincial Serious and Violent Crimes Unit, the Provincial Command Centre, and the Provincial Tracking Team.
The suspects were apprehended at different locations within the Wallacedene area, where police had tracked them to various hideouts.
The seven suspects are expected to face murder charges and will appear in the Blue Downs Magistrates Court.
SAPS has confirmed that the investigation will continue to determine the full extent of the suspect’s involvement in the killings, as well as to clarify any additional factors that may have contributed to the incident.
