The Khayelitsha murders that rocked Monwabisi Park are a top priority for Cape Town homicide detectives.
Khayelitsha murders: What we know about the victims
In a statement, police spokesperson Brigadier Novela Potelwa confirmed that a 72-hour activation plan has been launched to fast-track the search for suspects involved in the brutal murder of four men and a woman whose bodies were discovered at the informal settlement situated in Endlovini.
The gruesome discovery was made in the wee hours of Monday and, at this time, police are faced with the tough task of piecing together evidence to get a clear indication of what happened to the victims.
One crucial aspect of the investigation is determining the identity of the victims. At this juncture, detectives speculate the victims are aged between 25 and 35 years old.
“Police have initiated the 72-hour activation plan in search of yet-to-be-identified gunmen who killed five people in the Endlovini informal settlement in Khayelitsha on Monday morning. Crime experts are still scouring the scene where the murders occurred,” Brig. Potelwa noted.
The other incredibly challenging part of the investigation will be tracking down the suspects involved in the Khayelitsha murders. By this time, detectives would have collected shell casings, shoe prints — if there were any — and any identifiers found on the victims, such as ID cards, cellphones, etc.
Already, we know that eyewitnesses told investigators that multiple gunshots rang off in Monwabisi Park in the wee hours of Monday, possibly around the same time the five victims were executed.
At the time this article was published, police were still in search of the suspects who, it’s believed, are still at large.
Anyone with information that could assist the investigation is urged to contact the police on 08600 10111.
