South African police (SAPS) officials have launched a large-scale manhunt for James Neo Tshoaeli, also known as “Tiger,” a suspected zama zama kingpin believed to head an illegal mining network in Stilfontein, North West.
Police: Community helped James ‘Tiger’ Tshoaeli evade arrest
Police describe Tshoaeli, a Lesotho national, as dangerous and accuse him of escaping custody during a raid last week that resulted in the arrest of more than 200 alleged illegal miners.
Brigadier Athlenda Mathe, SAPS spokesperson, revealed that “maximum resources” are being deployed to locate Tshoaeli, who is accused of leading underground mining operations and engaging in violent criminal activities.
Tshoaeli reportedly resurfaced at Shaft 11 in Stilfontein during an operation aimed at rescuing trapped miners.
Despite being apprehended, police allege that community members and possibly law enforcement officials facilitated his escape before he could be processed.
Major General Patrick Asaneng, acting provincial police commissioner, called the incident an embarrassment to the ongoing “Operation Vala Umgodi,” a nationwide crackdown on illegal mining.
“Extensive investigations are underway to find those responsible for enabling his escape,” Asaneng stated, adding that disciplinary action would be taken against any officials implicated.
Tshoaeli’s escape has also prompted reviews of operational procedures at Stilfontein police station and nearby facilities.
Tshoaeli faces serious accusations, including orchestrating violent acts underground.
Witness statements and video evidence in police possession reportedly tie him to deaths, assaults, and incidents of torture involving miners under his control.
He is also alleged to have hoarded food supplies, depriving other miners of essential provisions.
Brigadier Mathe described him as a ringleader who “controlled operations underground with an iron fist.”
SAPS has urged members of the public to come forward with any information about Tshoaeli’s whereabouts.
“He is a fugitive from justice and poses a significant danger to society,” Mathe warned.
