Limpopo police are investigating a house robbery targeting a stokvel group in Strydkraal Block A village, Sekhukhune District.
Limpopo stokvel group robbed in suspected inside job
The robbery occurred on Monday, 9 December 2024, around 22:00, leaving two victims shaken and a substantial amount of cash stolen.
According to a statement by Limpopo police spokesperson Colonel Malesela Ledwaba, members of the stokvel group held a meeting earlier that day at the residence of a 54-year-old female member.
The meeting, which lasted from 15:00 to 19:00, involved discussions about distributing the group’s funds.
After the other members departed, leaving the victim alone with her teenage daughter, three unknown male suspects broke into the house around 22:00.
They reportedly stole the cash, locked the victims inside a bedroom, and fled on foot. A relative later rescued the victims, and the matter was reported to the police.
Limpopo Police Commissioner Lieutenant General Thembi Hadebe issued a stern warning to social clubs and stokvel groups about handling large sums of cash.
“The community, particularly social clubs, should avoid carrying lump sums of cash to prevent being victims of crime,” Hadebe stated.
A case of house robbery has been opened, and the police have launched a manhunt for the suspects.
While the investigation is ongoing, the circumstances surrounding the robbery have raised suspicions of inside involvement.
The timing of the crime—mere hours after the stokvel meeting—has led to speculation that the suspects may have been tipped off about the cash and its location.
Authorities have not confirmed these suspicions, making it clear that investigations are still in their early stages.
The police encourage the public to come forward with any information that could assist in identifying the perpetrators.
