Authorities have revealed the identity of the man being questioned in connection with the murder of UnitedHealthcare CEO Brian Thompson.
Suspect in UnitedHealthcare CEO murder identified as Luigi Mangione
Luigi Nicholas Mangione, a 26-year-old Maryland native, was apprehended in Altoona, Pennsylvania, following a coordinated law enforcement effort.
Mangione, who was valedictorian of the Class of 2016 at Gilman School, has no prior arrest history in New York.
According to NYPD Chief of Detectives Joe Kenny, Mangione has ties to San Francisco, California, and Honolulu, Hawaii.
Authorities speculate that Mangione harboured “ill will toward corporate America,” although the motive for Thompson’s murder remains under investigation.
According to reports, Mangione was arrested at a McDonald’s restaurant on East Plank Road in Altoona after being recognised from police-circulated images.
He was found carrying a fake New Jersey driver’s license, a ghost gun capable of firing 9mm rounds, and a computer.
Thompson was fatally shot outside a Manhattan hotel on Wednesday, 4 December 2024, less than an hour before UnitedHealthcare’s annual Investor Conference.
Mangione is alleged to have used a fake driver’s license to check into a Manhattan hostel prior to the murder.
Mangione’s capture follows a nationwide alert sparked by CCTV footage and witness accounts.
Law enforcement officials, including the FBI, Manhattan District Attorney’s Office, and Altoona Police Department, collaborated in tracking him down.
Members of the NYPD Detective Bureau and Manhattan District Attorney’s Office are travelling to Pennsylvania to interrogate Mangione further.
NYPD Commissioner Edward Caban lauded the coordinated efforts of multiple agencies in apprehending Mangione but stated,
“This investigation is far from over.”
UnitedHealth Group released a statement expressing its grief over Thompson’s death, calling him a “respected leader and cherished colleague.”
