Gauteng SAPS has launched an internal investigation after a video surfaced online allegedly showing officers from the Soweto Flying Squad accepting bribe money.
Gauteng SAPS launches probe into alleged bribe video
The footage, widely circulated on social media, has reignited concerns about corruption within law enforcement.
In the video, three police officers are seen engaging with an unidentified individual inside a stationary police vehicle.
The footage appears to show one of the officers accepting a cash bribe before the officers drive off.
Reports suggest the alleged bribe was linked to the release of a suspect accused of vehicle theft. The authenticity of the video is now under investigation as authorities work to verify its contents.
SAPS management in Gauteng confirmed on Monday that a disciplinary case has been instituted against the officers identified in the footage.
A spokesperson for the department, Colonel Dimakatso Nevhuhulwi, stated that an inquiry was opened on Saturday, 1 February 2025 to trace both the vehicle and the officers seen in the video.
“The Management of SAPS in Gauteng has taken note of the video circulating on social media platforms whereby police officers are allegedly demanding money from a civilian. An investigation was immediately launched to identify the vehicle in the video and trace the members who were driving it,” the SAPS statement read.
Authorities are now urging the alleged victim, from whom the money was purportedly solicited, to come forward and formally open a criminal case against the officers involved.
SAPS has also encouraged the public to report corrupt activities through designated anti-corruption hotlines and the MySAPS app.
“The public is encouraged to always report suspected corrupt activities by police officers on the anti-corruption hotline at 0800 701 701 or at IPID. For any criminal activities, reports can be made on 08600 10111, alternatively, anonymous tip-offs can also be submitted via the MySAPS App,” Nevhuhulwi added.
