Two men accused of the murder of controversial businessman Mark Lifman appeared in the George Magistrate’s Court on Thursday for their bail hearing.
Mark Lifman case: Here is the latest
Among those in attendance were alleged gang leader Jerome “Donkie” Booysen, his son Joel Booysen, and business associate Andre Naude.
Johannes Hendrik Jacobs and Gert Johannes Bezuidenhout are accused of premeditated murder in connection with Lifman’s assassination, which occurred on 3 November 2024 at the Garden Route Mall in George.
Police arrested the suspects shortly after the incident in Uniondale, approximately an hour outside George.
Jacobs and Bezuidenhout have ties to private security firm PPA Security.
Police raided the company’s Cape Town premises last week, seizing firearms and other items as part of the ongoing investigation into Lifman’s murder.
On the same day, police also searched the home of a PPA employee in Table View.
PPA Security has denied involvement in the murder, stating that Jacobs and Bezuidenhout worked for the company on a contract basis.
Police have confirmed that investigations are continuing, with no clear motive for the murder established at this stage.
Jerome Booysen, known to have had past dealings with Lifman, was present at the court appearance alongside his family and associates.
Booysen had previously alleged that one of the suspects, Gert Johannes Bezuidenhout, acted as the right-hand man for PPA shareholder Alwyn Landman.
Police have yet to comment on the implications of Booysen’s statements or his appearance at the hearing.
Jacobs and Bezuidenhout’s bail hearing continues, with prosecutors opposing bail on the basis of flight risk and public interest.
