The incident, which took place on the night of Friday, 10 January 2025, shocked the community and led to an immediate investigation ordered by Provincial Police Commissioner Lieutenant General Thembi Hadebe.
The charges against the suspect include robbery, kidnapping, and two counts of rape.
According to police reports, the armed suspect overpowered three security guards at the clinic.
After restraining two guards with handcuffs, he coerced the third to lead him to the clinic premises. The suspect then robbed two female nurses of their personal belongings, including their cellphones, before abducting them at gunpoint.
The victims were forced into nearby bushes, where they were sexually assaulted.
After the attack, the nurses managed to return to the clinic and alert authorities. They were subsequently taken to a nearby hospital for medical attention.
The attack has drawn widespread condemnation from community members, health officials, and trade unions.
COSATU Limpopo released a statement expressing horror at the incident and called on the Department of Health to provide comprehensive support to the victims.
“This attack highlights the persistent threat of violence faced by women, particularly those working in essential services,” said provincial police spokesperson Hlulani Mashaba.
In response, the Limpopo Department of Health temporarily closed the Ga-Chuene clinic, citing the need to prioritise the safety and well-being of staff and patients.
The clinic reopened on Tuesday, 14 January 2025, and remains under review as officials assess security measures.
