Western Cape police confirmed that a man and a woman, both between 30 and 40 years old, were apprehended on suspicion of murdering Manuel and an unidentified friend last month in Gugulethu.
According to police spokesperson Wesley Twigg, a possible motive behind the brutal killing is related to life insurance policies taken out by certain family members.
Twigg stated:
“Provincial Serious and Violent Crime detectives started with an intense investigation into the circumstances of the murders. The investigation revealed that life insurance policies were taken out by family members, which was identified as a possible motive.”
Police are also pursuing further suspects and do not rule out additional arrests.
Twigg added that the suspects are expected to appear in the Athlone Magistrate’s Court on Thursday, 14 November 2024, to face charges of murder and fraud.
How Manuel was killed
The fatal incident occurred on Tuesday night in October when Manuel and his friend were reportedly ambushed by unknown assailants in NY 141, Gugulethu.
Emergency responders arrived to find Manuel already deceased, while his companion succumbed to injuries at the hospital.
Manuel’s sudden death has sent shockwaves through the Gugulethu community, with many expressing grief over the loss.
Linda Kabeni, spokesperson for the Gugulethu Community Police Forum, commented on the tragedy, saying:
“We extremely condemn the brutal killing of David Manuel who was affectionately known as Gums. His passing has left many aspiring actors in disbelief, especially those who hail from the townships.”
David Manuel first rose to fame with his role as “Freddy Gums” in Noem My Skollie in 2016, a film that won him acclaim for his portrayal of a 28s prison gang leader.
Manuel went on to star in other productions, including Number 37 and danZ!, earning a reputation as a talented actor who overcame a challenging upbringing.
