A 25-year-old woman linked to an alleged child pornography ring appeared briefly in the Randburg Magistrate’s Court today.
Darren Wilken’s accomplice unmasked in court
Her case, which has garnered significant public attention due to its connection with Darren Wilken, was postponed to next week. The woman, a web designer from Houghton, faces charges of possession of child pornography and money laundering.
The court proceedings were brief, with the accused’s legal representative confirming that she intends to apply for bail at her next appearance.
No further evidence was presented during the session, and the court postponed the matter to allow investigators more time to gather information.
This appearance comes just days after her arrest, which followed an intensive operation by law enforcement targeting the distribution of child sexual abuse material.
The operation was part of a larger investigation that began with the arrest of her partner, 35-year-old Darren Wilken, in Midrand.
Wilken was arrested 10 days ago during a search-and-seizure operation conducted by the Family Violence, Child Protection, and Sexual Offences (FCS) unit and the Serial and Electronic Crime Investigations (SECI) team.
Acting on a tip from international law enforcement, investigators confiscated multiple electronic devices containing an estimated 10 million images and videos of child pornography.
Lieutenant Colonel Amanda van Wyk, a police spokesperson, explained that the digital evidence collected during the operation has been pivotal in advancing the case.
The raid also uncovered R560,000 in cash at Wilken’s residence, which prosecutors allege may be proceeds from the sale of illicit materials.
Wilken is expected to resume his bail application tomorrow.
The state requested more time during his previous appearance to investigate the source of the cash found in his possession.
Prosecutors are working to link the funds to the alleged distribution network, a task that requires detailed forensic analysis.
The National Prosecuting Authority (NPA) expressed confidence in the strength of the case, with regional spokesperson Phindi Mjonondwane stating that securing a conviction remains the priority.
The NPA is also considering whether to oppose bail for Wilken, citing the severity of the charges and the complexity of the investigation.
