A grim discovery was made in Atlantis, Cape Town, earlier today, after a man was found dead near the infamous Dura Flats.
UPDATE:
Atlantis police have confirmed that the fatal shooting near Dura Flats involved two victims—a 22-year-old man and a 62-year-old woman—on Friday, 12 January 2025, at approximately 09:25.
Captain FC van Wyk stated:
“Several gunshots were heard in the streets, and the deceased was running in the road where he fell. He was shot on his upper body and died on the scene due to injuries sustained. Another innocent bystander who was standing at her gate in her garden was fatally struck in the head by a stray bullet.”
Both victims were declared dead at the scene by medical personnel.
According to police, the incident, which occurred on Grosvenor Street, Saxonsea, is suspected to be gang-related. The unknown assailants fled the scene, and no arrests have been made as investigations continue.
The scene, caught on camera by a passing motorist, has ignited fear in the community, which has long been plagued by gang violence.
Watch: Man killed in Atlantis in suspected gang shooting
The footage shows a body covered in a white bag, surrounded by evidence cones as investigators comb the scene for clues.
While the motive behind the killing remains unclear, authorities are treating the incident as a suspected gang-related shooting.
A statement from Cape Town police will be included in this article as soon as it’s received.
The incident comes amid heightened tensions in the Cape Flats, which have seen a surge in gang-related violence.
While it is too early to confirm whether the Atlantis shooting is linked to gang retaliation, the area has a history of gang conflicts spilling over into other parts of the Western Cape.
This tragedy follows a separate but equally harrowing incident in Lentegeur, Cape Flats, over the weekend. On Friday evening, a six-year-old girl was critically injured in a gang shootout on Skilpadbessie Street.
Videos from the scene show chaos erupting as rival gangs, identified as the Fancy Boys and Americans, exchanged gunfire in a residential area.
The young victim was struck by a stray bullet as she played outside her home. Despite her injuries, the girl is in stable condition and receiving treatment.
Police quickly mobilised and arrested three suspects, aged 18, 27, and 29, the following day.
They were expected to appear in the Mitchells Plain Magistrates Court on Monday, on charges of attempted murder.
