In a statement to Swisher Post, Cape Town police revealed that a security guard stationed on Camps Bay Drive was forced to defend himself when two unknown males attempted to rob him early this morning.
According to Captain FC van Wyk, the guard was performing his routine duties when the suspects approached and attempted to stab him.
“Camps Bay police registered an attempted murder following an incident on [Friday, 16 August 2024] at about 06:15 at Camps Bay Drive. According to reports, a member of a security company was busy with guard duties when he was approached by two unknown males who attacked him and wanted to stab him,” the statement read.
As the situation escalated, the security guard drew his firearm and shot one of the attackers in the stomach.
The other suspect immediately fled the scene, disappearing in an unknown direction.
“The injured suspect was taken to a nearby hospital for medical treatment under police guard,” the police confirmed.
The suspect’s condition is serious, and he remains in custody while receiving medical attention.
Meanwhile, police have launched a manhunt for the second suspect, who remains at large.
The scene of the attack was quickly secured by law enforcement, and a knife and screwdriver were recovered, both believed to have been carried by the suspects during the attempted robbery.
“SAPS members found a knife and screwdriver on the scene, which was handed in as exhibits and for further processing,” the police statement noted.
Authorities believe the motive behind the attack was robbery, given the evidence recovered at the scene and the nature of the confrontation.
Local residents and businesses in the area have expressed concern over the incident, as Camps Bay is typically known for its safety and upscale environment.
