On Thursday, 6 June 2024, a significant drug smuggling attempt was thwarted at Cape Town International Airport (CTIA) thanks to the coordinated efforts of the Hawks and border police.
Cape Town Airport security lauded for intercepting British tik smuggler
A 70-year-old UK citizen was arrested for attempting to smuggle approximately 4.1 kg of methamphetamine (tik) valued at around R600,000.
Tik is a highly addictive stimulant drug. It is commonly found in crystal form and is known for its potent and harmful effects on the central nervous system.
The suspect was apprehended just before he was set to depart South Africa.
The arrest came after the Hawks’ South African Narcotics Enforcement Bureau team, working in conjunction with the Border Police at CTIA, received and acted on crucial information.
During a search of the man’s luggage, officers discovered the concealed drugs in a hidden compartment of his suitcase.
Following the discovery, the suspect was detained at Ravensmead SAPS pending further investigation.
ACSA Cluster 2 Regional General Manager Mark Maclean commended the swift and effective actions of the Hawks and border police, which led to the successful interception of the illicit substance.
“ACSA would like to congratulate the law enforcement agencies involved in this operation and thank them for their ongoing work and dedication to stamping out the smuggling of illicit drugs across our borders,” he stated.
The suspect is expected to make his first court appearance in Bellville on Monday, 10 June 2024.
