Brandon ‘Puff’ Kalicharan, his wife Jeconiah Pillay and their nine-year-old daughter were viciously gunned down in a drive-by shooting on Tuesday, and fears are growing within the Chatsworth community of imminent gang retaliation.
What happened to Brandon ‘Puff’ Kalicharan?
Rumblings of a brewing gang war in Chatsworth, Durban, grew louder when news surfaced that its kingpin and leader of the 11th Street gang was brutally murdered in cold blood while driving on Peter Road in Springfield Park.
From what we understand, Puff was headed out of the busy industrial area with his 34-year-old wife in the passenger seat of his Volkswagen Amarok, and their daughter in the back, when unidentified suspects pulled up in two vehicles and offloaded high-calibre shells from both sides of the vehicle.
Kalicharan and his wife died instantly, while their daughter clung to life and was rushed to hospital. Tragically, she too was pronounced dead hours later.

Details on the triple homicide remain sketchy. However, according to police, Kalicharan’s death may have links to his alleged underworld dealings as a prominent drug peddler in Durban.
“The motive for the killing is unknown, though preliminary investigations suggest that the man who was shot was allegedly involved in drug and gang-related activities in Chatsworth and was a person of interest on some cases being investigated by the Hawks,” police spokesperson Col Robert Netshiunda told TimesLIVE.
Kalicharan’s death has prompted fears of an all-out war in Chatsworth. The 11th Street gang leader allegedly ran a sophisticated and hotly contested drug network that culminated in deadly turf wars with rival groups such as the Cartel Gang and the notorious Drey Boys.
Suspicion remains rife regarding the culpability of the two above-mentioned gangs in the triple homicide.
Kalicharan was also the subject of an intensive Hawks investigation and in 2021, the alleged kingpin was taken down in a dramatic raid on his property in Chatsworth and slapped with charges ranging from murder, and possession of unlicensed firearms to drug dealing.
However, due to his deep-rooted connections with high-ranking police officials in Durban, Hawks investigators were never able to make any of the charges stick.
Investigations into his murder continue with no suspects arrested.
