Authorities in Altoona, Pennsylvania, have confirmed that bodycam footage of the arrest of Luigi Mangione, charged with the murder of UnitedHealthcare CEO Brian Thompson, will soon be released to the public.
Luigi Mangione latest news: Bodycam footage is coming soon
Mangione, apprehended on Monday at a McDonald’s, is facing multiple charges, including second-degree murder, weapons-related offences, and forgery.
Mangione was detained after an employee at McDonald’s recognised him from widely circulated police images.
Officers located him with a laptop and backpack, wearing a medical mask.
During questioning, Mangione initially provided false identification but later admitted his identity, reportedly saying:
“I clearly shouldn’t have [lied],” according to police records.
A search of Mangione’s backpack revealed a firearm and silencer, allegedly created using 3D-printing technology.
Police also recovered a handwritten manifesto that reportedly criticised healthcare corporations, including UnitedHealthcare, for prioritising profits over care.
The manifesto reportedly included phrases such as “These parasites had it coming” and “I do apologise for any strife and trauma, but it had to be done.”
Background on Mangione and his motives
Mangione, who grew up in Maryland, has been described by acquaintances as a former valedictorian and engineer grappling with severe back pain, which reportedly led to spinal surgery in 2023.
He is accused of targeting Thompson due to grievances against the healthcare industry, which his manifesto described as “abusive.”
Authorities have not disclosed whether Mangione acted alone or if additional charges are forthcoming.
The upcoming bodycam footage is expected to shed light on the moments leading up to his arrest and may provide additional clarity about his state of mind at the time.
Mangione’s legal team has not issued an official plea but released a statement calling for the public to avoid jumping to conclusions before the case proceeds to trial.
They assert that Mangione’s rights should remain protected during what they expect to be a high-profile legal process.
Brian Thompson, 50, was fatally shot outside his Midtown Manhattan hotel just over a week ago, a crime police have attributed to Mangione.
Investigators believe Mangione meticulously planned the attack, possibly motivated by frustrations linked to healthcare policies and industry practices.
