A man accused of brutally killing a five-year-old boy in Bishop Lavis faced the wrath of an enraged community on Wednesday morning.
The suspect, a man in his forties, was ambushed by furious residents who sought instant justice for the heinous act.
Ironically, it was the police who intervened and rescued the suspect, who was severely beaten by the mob.
He was immediately taken to the hospital for medical attention and will be transferred to jail once he recovers to begin the judicial process.
The incident unfolded at around 10:40 on Sky Road in Bishop Lavis.
Cape Town SAPS spokesperson Captain Frederick van Wyk confirmed the tragic events, stating that police are investigating a murder case following the stabbing incident.
“Bishop Lavis police are investigating a murder case following a stabbing incident on Wednesday, August 7, at about 10:40 at a premises in Sky Road, Bishop Lavis where a five-year-old boy sustained a fatal stab wound,” said Captain van Wyk.
According to reports, police responded to the complaint and were informed about the boy who had been stabbed with a knife.
Officers followed up on information that led them to a local hospital where a member of the public had transported the boy.
At the hospital, officers were shown the body, which bore three stab wounds to the back. Despite efforts to save him, the boy was declared deceased due to the injuries sustained.
Captain van Wyk confirmed that a suspect has been arrested in connection with the murder.
“A male in his forties, who is believed to be mentally challenged, was arrested by the police and taken to Bishop Lavis SAPS for detention. The investigation continues,” he said.
The motive behind the senseless killing remains unclear, but the incident has left the community of Bishop Lavis in shock and mourning.
