According to preliminary information, the heist unfolded with explosive force as suspects tried to breach the armoured vehicle.

CIT heists in 2024: A growing concern
In 2024, cash-in-transit robberies saw an increase, with 97 arrests related to these crimes reported in the first half of the year.
During this period, 18 AK-47 rifles and 35 vehicles were seized as part of anti-crime operations.
Notable incidents included a heist on the N2 highway in KwaZulu-Natal, where a money truck was bombed, resulting in one fatality and a serious injury to a security guard.
In another case, law enforcement in the Free State recovered R6 million in stolen cash and detained four suspects involved in a robbery.
