Amaoti e-hailing driver survives horror hijacking
The harrowing incident unfolded on Monday after the driver picked up two passengers from the Pavilion Hotel in Durban Central.
Upon reaching the agreed destination in Amaoti, the driver’s passengers were joined by two accomplices armed with firearms.
Without warning, the attackers shot the driver, commandeered his white Toyota Rumion, and fled the scene.
In a statement, Reaction Unit South Africa confirmed receiving an alert from a member of the public and officers were dispatched to the scene.
En route, the officers were flagged down by occupants of a silver Toyota Corolla Verso, who were transporting the injured driver to a medical facility.
The victim, seated in the back seat of the vehicle, was conscious and informed RUSA officers of the sequence of events.
He explained that after being ambushed, bystanders had rushed to assist him and were en route to the hospital when they encountered the response team.
Police are investigating the incident with no solid leads to report at this time.
While the victim is fortunate to have survived the attack, the stolen Toyota Rumion remains missing, and the suspects are at large.
