Alexandra police station shooting: Here’s what we know
The shooting, which took place around 10:00, has shocked the local police community.
While details regarding the suspect’s motive remain unclear, police have confirmed the sequence of events that led to the fatal confrontation.
According to deputy provincial police commissioner Major General Fred Kekana, the suspect entered the station seeking assistance.
Initial reports indicate that he was directed to sit while waiting for an officer, but instead, he approached a desk where an officer was seated in civilian clothing, working on a report.
Without warning, the man grabbed the officer’s firearm and immediately began firing randomly inside the police station.
Kekana explained:
“He grabbed that firearm and started shooting randomly,” causing panic and chaos.
During the onslaught, two officers—a 46-year-old sergeant and a 27-year-old constable—sustained shoulder injuries.
Police personnel inside the station reacted quickly, ordering the suspect to cease fire as they attempted to neutralise the threat.
The chase eventually ended with the suspect fatally wounded.
Following the incident, the injured officers were transported for medical attention and are reported to be in stable condition.
Major General Kekana confirmed, “They are in stable condition,” though they are still under observation and receiving treatment.
Both officers, who were hit in the shoulder, are expected to make a full recovery.
In response to the traumatic event, counselling services have been made available to all officers present at the station.
“Our social workers…are currently busy attending to all the members, including those who were not in the centre,” Kekana added.
Authorities have yet to reveal details about the suspect’s background or possible motives.
