South Africa’s LGBTQIA+ community is reeling in the shock following the brutal death of Aubrey Boshoga, a queer male who died at the hands of alleged homophobic killers.
What happened to Aubrey Boshoga?
Boshoga’s tragic passing went viral on social media after sordid details of how he was hacked to death surfaced. According to reports, Boshoga was accosted in his home in Johannesburg, in the wee hours of Saturday 29 May 2021.
It’s believed that an unknown number of suspects entered the property where Boshoga lived and stabbed him multiple times. In an attempt to send a strong message, it’s believed the suspects purposefully dumped the victim’s body outside his property.
By the time authorities and rescue officials arrived at the scene, it was too late. Boshoga was a South African Airways flight attendant and a talented wire sculptor believed to be in his 40s.
Social media demands ‘Justice for Aubrey’
At this time, no updates have come from police. Our attempts to get a statement from Johannesburg police were unsuccessful, at the time this article was published.
Social media has rallied up an online campaign to spread awareness about the senseless death of Boshoga. Here are some of the reactions we picked out:
How many Queer South Africans are going to die before taking action? Gay rights has been legal for so many years here, yet clearly there still needs to be serious conversations on how toxic & dangerous the conservative nature of this country is.May you RIP #JusticeForAubrey ️

May the perpetrators be found and be jailed for a long time. Queer people should stop this nonsense of hijacking every death of citizens for their nonsense activism. Pure criminality is a hate crime to them. #JusticeForAubrey

Went through the Aubrey story but I don't see where it says that he was killed for being gay? Isn't SA dangerous and people are just killed by criminals ? What's the difference between the farm murder lie and this gay murder thing that's being perpetuated?#JusticeForAubrey

It makes me wonder who is the cause of the problem. A gay man going about his business or the homophobe(s) who murdered him. Why should you care about how someone else lives their life if it has no consequence on your own? RIP Aubrey ️ #JusticeForAubrey pic.twitter.com/NilIPfjxpX
