Traffic has been halted at the Mabopane highway interchange in Tshwane after a South African Breweries (SAB) truck, filled to the brim with cases and trays of beer, was looted.
Watch: Mabopane motorists loot SAB truck
Under normal circumstances, the events we saw in this video would be cast as a case of opportunity. Except, seeing scores of motorists jump out of their vehicles to grab beers from a SAB truck rings a bit different considering that South Africa is under Level 3 Lockdown where the sale of alcohol has been banned.
How much alcohol was looted?
Renowned reporter of all things that hinder free passage on our roads, @TrafficSA, shared videos and pictures of the madness that ensued on Rosslyn Road.
The destination of the truck is not known but from what we understand, it was carrying a large amount of beer. At this time, SAB has not issued a statement to indicate the financial loss suffered from this unfortunate incident.
However, people who were lucky enough to be within reach of the looting will look to the skies and thank the heavens for this unorthodox offering.
Alcohol has been banned in South Africa, after President Cyril Ramaphosa showed leniency in allowing sales when Level 3 Lockdown was introduced in June.
This, however, proved to be detrimental to the government’s efforts to slow down the spread of the coronavirus (Covid-19). The decision to ban alcohol has received a lot of backlash but the government remained resolute in their stance, regardless of the negative economic impact.
o-date, more than 445 000 Covid-19 cases have been recorded in South Africa, of which 6 769 patients have died.
