Watch: Aftermath of bloody Kempton Park shooting [video]
Kempton Park is still reeling from the intense scenes that were observed in the Johannesburg suburb on Tuesday afternoon.
Kempton Park shooting: What exactly happened?
At first, it was believed that the town had recorded a second cash-in-transit robbery in a span of 24 hours.
However, reports confirmed that this time around, a number of armed suspects had robbed a VIP protection vehicle that was allegedly transporting money that belonged to a taxi association.
Motorists were advised to avoid driving near Monument, Dunn and Great North Road as a team of members from the Benoni Flying Squad, SAPS and Ekurhuleni Metro Police Department were actively in pursuit of the suspects who had made off in a black Volkswagen.
BFS spokesperson Warrant Officer Grant Giblin told Kempton Park Express that two suspects were killed in the shootout and one other was critically injured and subsequently rushed to a nearby hospital for treatment.
“A shootout took place down Great North Road between the BFS, Kempton SAPS, the EMPD and the suspects in the Polo until the vehicle came to a standstill at the corner of Beech and Kanna streets in Benoni,” he said.

Sirens of the squadron of police vehicles reverberated throughout the Johannesburg town. CCTV from a home security camera caught footage of the final confrontation between the suspects and the police and more than 50 gunshots could be heard.
