A motorist in Honeydew, Johannesburg, will be glad that his life was spared in a hijacking that could have turned ugly if he had shown defiance.
Honeydew hijacking caught on CCTV
The whole incident was captured on CCTV. Thus, not only do we have visual of the tragic events that befell this unknown male victim, but there is metadata that tells us important information about when the hijacking took place.
At approximately 07:46 on Sunday, a motorist is captured on CCTV pulling into a residential driveway, tailed by a white Renault. Before the motorist in the cherry Ford Mustang could pull off with the gates open, the doors of the Renault swing open and two men, carrying assault rifles, approach the driver’s window.
The CCTV footage is grainy but one can clearly see the motorist being instructed to open the door and get out. About 10 seconds pass before the motorist concedes to the armed men’s demands.
One of the robbers takes control of the Mustang and his accomplice attempts to shove the victim into the back of the Renault. However, a scuffle breaks out and with little time to waste, the suspect abandons his attempts to kidnap the victim.
The Mustang owner runs across the street and his legs get the better of him. It’s unclear at this point if he was injured in the incident. But, he doesn’t move until his Mustang pulls out of the driveway and tails the Renault out of frame.
Shortly before the footage cuts off, the victim is seen running across the road to the driveway where a resident, who we believe witnessed the ordeal, rushes to open the security gate.
