Amazingly, all the scary stories people tell about Signal Hill do nothing to discourage hikers from experiencing a trek on the majestic Cape Town mountain trail.
Hikers get robbed on Signal Hill
If you are unlucky, those breath-taking views of the cityscape and the Atlantic Seaboard can come at a cost of encountering a predator who lurks in the bushes and caves, waiting to pounce at any time of the day.
A couple of hikers experienced such an ordeal on Saturday afternoon, according to Cape Town police spokesperson Brigadier Novela Potelwa.
Cape Central police were called to Signal Hill after a knife-wielding robber attacked a couple of hikers, making off with their iPhones.
Find My iPhone proves handy in catching robber
It is hard to decide what exactly makes this criminal dumb, the fact that he fled on foot or that he failed to realise that by stealing an iPhone, he was basically opening himself up to being tracked.
Thankfully, the quick response of the police officers, matched with the tracking info provided by the Find My iPhone feature, the suspect was found hiding in a makeshift cave only two hours after the robbery occurred.
“The two cellphones and a knife were seized. A 35-year-old suspect from Khayelitsha was arrested on charges of aggravated robbery and possession of a dangerous weapon. He will appear in court on Monday, 15 June 2020,” Brigadier Potwela revealed.
Fortunately, the hikers survived the incident and were able to retrieve their iPhones.
Thank goodness for the swift response of the Cape central police — and Steve Jobs — another dangerous criminal has been removed from tormenting the picturesque slopes of Signal Hill.
