Thanks to the alerts of Gugulethu residents, police were able to arrest three suspects linked to a business robbery that took place at the Cape Town township, on Thursday.
Gugulethu business robbery: Three arrested, cash and goods recovered
According to police spokesperson Colonel Andrè Traut, a patrol vehicle from SAPS’ Flying Squad was in the vicinity of the bustling Gugulethu shopping district when a commotion was heard.
“While on patrol in the area, the members spotted a suspect being pursued by the public, and reacted by arresting the man. They were informed that a sports shop was robbed by suspects who fled with cash and clothing,” Traut revealed in a statement.
The suspect, still unidentified at this stage, was pressured into giving up his alleged accomplices and a coordinated effort was made to track them down.
“The further intervention of the members resulted in the arrest of two more suspects, who were caught in possession of the stolen goods and cash,” the statement continued.
All three suspects will appear at the Athlone Magistrate’s Court on business robbery charges, where their intentions to apply for bail will be heard.
At this time, all we know about the unidentified suspects is that they are aged between 18 and 21. From what we understand, Cape Town police will run ballistic checks on the guns that were recovered from the arrest.
There appears to be a growing sense of belief that the three suspects may be wanted for other open criminal cases.
This is a developing story.
